8 Audiobooks I Would Recommend:
I’ve always loved to read, but in the past few years, I’ve found that I also love listening to Audiobooks. Audiobooks are a great option if you know that you want to read more, but struggle to find the time.
Non-Fiction:
Breaking Cover
I first discovered Michele on Jenny Blake’s Pivot podcast, and I was immediately sold. I was so inspired by both her story and I felt like I could listen to her talk forever. In short, Breaking Cover is the story of her life working for the CIA in the Middle East. Not knowing much about that part of the world, it completely opened my eyes and was both exciting, and informative.
3 Feet From Gold
This was one of the best reading surprises I’ve had this year. If you enjoy personal development, business, entrepreneurship, etc. then this is a must read. There are so many gems to apply to both work and life from this book. It follows a story format so it’s incredibly engaging and easy to follow but also has so much applicable information. I could even see myself re-reading this again.
The 5 Second Rule
This is another “self-help” must read. The author, Mel Robbins, is one of the top speakers in the world and the subtitle of this book is “Transform your life, work, and confidence through everyday courage.” It’s so good and what I love most is that a big part of the book is sharing real life examples of people who have put the 5 second rule into practice in their own lives.
Fierce Faith
The subtitle is, “A woman’s guide to fighting fear, wrestling worry, and overcoming anxiety.” Fortunately, this book came out at exactly the right time when I was experiencing a lot of worry and anxiety in my own life, so it was just what I needed. If these are things that you find yourself struggling with, then this is the book for you. It’s also written from a Christian perspective with Biblical references.
Fiction:
So far, I’ve found that there are two particular fiction genres that tend to make for great audiobooks, historical fiction and thrillers. The advantage of choosing fiction for an audiobook is that since you’re listening to a story, you don’t have to worry about jotting down notes to remember key points, as you might with non-fiction.
Also, when you’re listening, I find that it’s much easier to get distracted than when reading a book. Therefore, it’s important to find a book that is highly engaging and will hold your interest.
The Nightingale (Historical Fiction)
This one is highly popular, and for good reason! If you enjoy historical fiction, this is a good one to start with. Set during World War 2, the story follows the lives of two central characters, French sisters, named, Vianne (the elder) and Isabelle (the younger sister). While living very different lives, they both show the bravery and important role of everyday people that is often overlooked. It’s truly beautiful.
All the Light We Cannot See (Historical Fiction)
This one is also historical fiction and is also set in France during World War 2. The main character is a young girl name Marie-Laure who starts off living in Paris with her father but is forced to flee to the countryside during the war. The other central character is a young boy named Werner living in Germany. Eventually, their lives intertwine. This is also a really good book and I’d highly recommend it!
Truly Madly Guilty (Thriller)
If you haven’t read any of Liane Moriarty’s book, then you’re in for a treat, as she’s a fantastic writer! This one follows the lives of 3 families. You immediately discover that something is wrong, but Moriarty spends the whole book unpacking all of the details. It’s quite the page turner and I have to admit that I had such a hard time turning it off each day, I wanted to listen to the whole thing at once.
The Obsession (Thriller)
I believe this was my first audiobook! This one’s a thriller so once you get started, it’s difficult to stop listening. It’s filled with thrills, mystery, and romance, all in one book. Believe it or not, I’d never read any of Nora Roberts writing but this one sold me. Also, if you don’t believe me, it has a rating of 4.7/5.0 on Amazon which is pretty good.
As I mentioned, I’ve really come to love audiobooks over the past few years. Right now, I have an Audible subscription which allows me to receive credits each month for audiobooks. I pay $14.95 a month and receive 1 credit which is good for any audiobook regardless of price. I also love that if you have an Audible subscription, you get a 30% discount on any other audiobooks that you purchase. You can even exchange any books that you don’t love, which is a great feature!
