Today I was watching to Mel Robbins latest video in her Mindset Reset series as she talked about environmental triggers. And I have to say, I loved this teaching. You see, environmental triggers are those little things (or positive habits) within our everyday environments. Without even thinking about it, these make our lives so much easier. And without a doubt, you will change your life for the better.
For example, she gave the example of setting out your running clothes the evening before. That way, when you wake up in the morning, you have a trigger that it’s time to go for a run. As someone who sets out my clothes and pajamas ahead of time each day, I could completely relate to this.

This really got me thinking about all of the little environmental triggers that I have sprinkled throughout my day. For instance, I make sure that the coffee is ground the night before and that I’ve set out mugs for both my morning coffee and water. I never used to be a morning person so I found that making my mornings as easy and effortless as possible really helped with this.
Here are some more examples of positive environmental triggers:
- Write out your first task of the day
- Put the book you’ve been wanting to start on your bed or bedside table
- Set an alarm on your phone to take a break and go for a walk
- Get a sign or decor for your office with an encouraging message
- Put your vitamins by your spot at the dinner table so you’ll remember to take them
- Use a password with an inspiring word or phrase
- Fill your pantry and refrigerator with fruits and vegetables rather than processed foods
- Fill up a water bottle the night before so that it’s ready to take with you in the morning
- Put your family members as your screensaver on your computer so that you are reminded of what’s most important to you
Friends, this might seem really simple but if you put this into practice, it will truly have a massive impact on your life. We all experience times when life feels overwhelming and just getting through the day can feel like a challenge. And, it’s at the lowest of low moments when positive habits and environmental triggers will save you and keep you on the path.

As you’re going through your day today, take stock of your surroundings. Do you currently have positive environmental triggers and what are they? If not, take a few minutes and jot down 3-5 ideas.
The big picture idea here is to think about the person you want to be in 5 years. Then, start working your way backwards. What are the environmental triggers that will help you to get where you want to go?
If you want a healthy body, then fill your refrigerator with healthy choices and throw out the junk food and sugar. Or, set out your running clothes so that it’s one step easier to get to the gym in the morning. These are insanely simple changes that will get you where you want to go with very little added effort and will truly change your life.
